While Swimmers Escaped Danger, Viral Photo Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, describes the famous shoreline as her back yard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, similar to other neighbors, detected loud noises reverberating through the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. Exiting her residence, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the avenue, speaking to a duo who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she heard someone moving up at her rear. It was a beach patrol officer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. It was just him heading in the direction that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that large equipment and without footwear … He’s running into something that certainly every fibre in your being would tell you to run in the reverse way.

“Without a second thought, but just totally pedal to the metal running.”

A Symbol of Heroism Amidst Crisis

The image Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many instances of courage in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, law enforcement and medical teams attending to dozens of those hurt.

Collective Outpouring and Support

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the site of the violence serving as a impromptu treatment center. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen responding bravely, including rushing into the water to assist people needing help.

In the days after the events, statements of support circulated widely. One post shared gratitude for the individuals who demonstrated that “goodness will always overcome darkness”.

The group of lifeguards later shared a communication, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive messages and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the compassion shown towards our personnel,” the organization commented. “In time, we will share our stories in the belief that it aids those affected.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many full-time lifeguards, said that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the shooting started through to late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many moving accounts, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” stated a mayor.

“The team show dedication every day in ensuring our world-famous shores safe for visitors, but what we witnessed on that evening should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the horror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much positivity we have seen in the presence of such hatred.”
