Uche Sparks Comfortable Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the knockout stages, especially following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This occasion offered a chance for several Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their league season were outmatched against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
