Our team is analyzing images and video shared earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
