The President Invites Relatives of Injured Guard Personnel to White House
President Trump stated on the weekend that he has extended an invitation the loved ones of a National Guard member fatally shot last week to come to the White House.
He added that he contacted her family and they were “deeply grieving”.
Background on the Heartbreaking Shooting
Soldier Beckstrom, 20, was fatally shot in a violent incident on Wednesday in DC.
Her fellow service member, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in grave state.
Gatherings across the state have occurred in their memory.
Presidential Call
The president said he’s talked about a visit to the White House for the families of both members of the West Virginia National Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re prepared, because that’s a hard experience, visit the White House. We’re going to pay tribute to Sarah,” the president told the press. “And likewise with Andrew, no matter the outcome.”
Community Support
Attendees assembled over the weekend at a local school in the state to honor Sarah.
Both they had been fulfilling duties with the West Virginia National Guard as part of Trump’s government program to aid public safety in DC.
Paying Tribute to the Soldier
“Sarah was the kind of student that teachers desired. She carried herself with calm resilience, a warm expression and a optimistic attitude that inspired those around her,” Jarrod Hankins, the head of her alma mater, informed the press. “She was sweet, considerate and always willing to support those in need.”
Funeral arrangements for Beckstrom are still being arranged.
Legal Actions and Policy Revisions
Officials have accused a 29-year-old Afghan national with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of violent assault while carrying a weapon.
The tragedy caused the administration to pause refugee claims and cease granting visas to holders of travel documents.
Status of Wolfe
Wolfe, a native of Martinsburg, enlisted in February 2019 and is a graduate of his local high school, as reported by the Associated Press.
He is still undergoing care and is “fighting for his life”, West Virginia leader Patrick Morrisey mentioned on a news program.
Attorney general Pam Bondi informed the program that she planned to meet with the family.
Legacy of the Fallen Soldier
Beckstrom, from Summersville, completed her education from her high school in mid-2023 and joined the military shortly after, serving as a law enforcement officer with honor, according to the military.
“She had a lot of goodness and she certainly had fortitude,” he told the audience at the service. “Though her time was cut short, she has created a legacy that’s going to endure.”
