NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key policy, hesitated to declare this decision right away after his victory in November.

"This decision rested on our family's safety and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

However his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he hails from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his modest Astoria home.

With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
