One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed how parent company Unilever prevented the introduction of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced that he will independently develop this new flavor as part of an individual series highlighting issues the company was prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Involving Creators versus Parent Company

This latest development escalates the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the British packaged goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

Both founders have claimed that Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "maintaining its activist principles".

Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support

Mr. Cohen stated through social media how he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus additional components.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has become a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians due to its coloration, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.

Historical Activism plus Current Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.

The new product line will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first established in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Management Changes and Upcoming Plans

The founder indicated that he will develop additional ice cream flavors that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly by Unilever.

The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from the company recently, after many years with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.

At that time, Mr. Cohen commented how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
