The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.
The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who are known at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
