The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit series coming to an end—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Does the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why mess with the classics?

“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
