Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
When I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival
That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and being named best player.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to control his aggression, having been sent off at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
