Israeli citizens commemorate two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel responded by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the proposal.
A senior delegate knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an night meeting of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.
The source stated the morning session finished without significant progress, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the opening period of the deal.
He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to close the differences between the both parties.
Critical Issues in Talks
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict administration of the area
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location appears as home anymore and until every captive are released none of us will have peace of mind."
"When we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.
In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel says forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.
Activist one woman stated: "We must do every compromise required for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens want the conflict to conclude in as payment for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.
From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.
In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk comes, the dread appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, embracing, especially my little child who puts his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The healthcare center in the urban area said it had taken in the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area reported two more victims had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the south region, health workers reported.
