RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
